Minister of Supply: Unsubsidised Bread Prices Will Not Be Raised
The confirmation comes as subsidised bread prices are set to see a 300% hike.
May 30, 2024
Dr. Ali Al Musailhi, Minister of Supply and Internal Trade, has confirmed that unsubsidised bread prices will not be increased, following the recent announcement of a 300% price hike for subsidised bread from 5 piasters to 20 piasters. Government support for the bread baking sector is not budgeted to decrease, and as such unsubsidised bread prices will not be forced to increase.
However, whilst prices won’t be changing, the bread itself will, following the decision to begin mixing sorghum and corn flour into bread. This will reduce the quantity of imported wheat flour required for each loaf.
