As part of Egypt’s ongoing national Haya Karima initiative to improve social conditions in rural communities, the Ministry of Awqaf has launched the ‘Feeding Sukuk’ project, which will distribute meat to low-income families and individuals.

The meat will be sourced from the Al-Basateen slaughterhouse. Starting Thursday, February 3rd, a minimum of 100 tonnes will be donated to 100,000 families per month, with plans to double the quantity during Ramadan.

The project comes in partnership with the Ministry of Social Solidarity, a number of state agencies and endowment directorates. It will initially start by providing monthly meat donations to 3000 families across a number of governorates but will eventually increase the number of families as well as the frequency of deliveries.

To donate to the ‘Feeding Sukuk’ charitable initiative, people can purchase a food bond at a cost of EGP 300 from the Ministry of Awqaf. This donation can be considered a form of zakat, alms or penance.

The Ministry of Awqaf called on those overseeing the project to refrain from photographing the needy for social media points and to deliver the meat to them in a dignified manner. To ensure the project is carried out efficiently, the relevant state institutions will develop an audited database of families in need of assistance across the country.
