National Red List Will Keep Track of Smuggled Egyptian Artefacts

Launched by the Ministry of Tourism and the Supreme Council of Antiquities, the Red List project keeps track of smuggled Egyptian artefacts, whether they have been recovered or are still missing. The list falls under the purview of a department created within the Supreme Council of Antiquities that focuses solely on recovered artefacts.

Dr. Mostafa Waziri, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, revealed that over 29,000 artefacts have been recovered over the past few years, and that the return of more is possible through the Red List.

Many of the artefacts illegally smuggled out of Egypt are already on the Red List, including ceramic, metal and stone statues, along with pots and containers of pottery and stones, funerary items, architectural items, religious or ritualistic portraits, coins, and manuscripts.
