Nazlet El-Semman to Be Redeveloped as Part of Giza Tourism Strategy
The government aims to transform the Nazlet El-Semman neighbourhood into a regulated tourist destination by the Giza Pyramids.

The Egyptian government has announced a redevelopment plan for Nazlet El-Semman, a residential area adjacent to the Giza Plateau, with the aim of incorporating it more formally into the surrounding archaeological and tourist landscape. The announcement was made during a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, attended by the Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, the Governor of Giza, and officials from the General Organisation for Urban Harmony and the Supreme Council of Antiquities.
According to the government, the area’s current urban layout and unregulated commercial activity present challenges for managing and presenting the Giza Pyramids as a global heritage site. The redevelopment plan seeks to introduce a more cohesive and regulated environment, balancing archaeological conservation with tourism-driven development.
The strategy includes rehabilitating existing residential buildings and converting them into uses compatible with tourism, such as boutique accommodation or cultural spaces. In parallel, authorities plan to restore and highlight key archaeological features, including the ascending causeway and valley temple, while establishing a buffer zone between the Giza Plateau and the surrounding urban area.
The plan forms part of a larger vision linked to the upcoming inauguration of the Grand Egyptian Museum and the ongoing experimental rollout of a new internal transportation system within the Giza Plateau, operated by Orascom Pyramids for Entertainment Services. The system includes designated bus routes and entry points, and has already led to a 120% increase in visitors using the new entrance.
According to statements made during the government meeting, relocation efforts for residents and informal vendors are being carried out in coordination with relevant agencies, with compensation and alternative housing provided where appropriate.
