A newly-unveiled statue in Aswan pays tribute to renowned cardiac surgeon Sir Magdi Yacoub, founder of the Magdi Yacoub Heart Foundation.

The 2-metre sculpture was crafted by Egyptian artist Nathan Doss during the 27th Aswan International Sculpture Symposium. Carved out of red granite, the statue depicts a bust of Sir Magdi Yacoub and a human heart hanging over a lit candle, which symbolises the surgeon’s message of healing and hope.

Sir Magdi Yacoub is renowned for offering free cardiac surgery and catheterization through the Magdi Yacoub Foundation, which was launched in 2008. In 2009, the foundation inaugurated the Aswan Heart Centre, giving an underprivileged community access to free life-saving heart procedures.
