New Study Shows Egyptians Just Can't Stop Doom Scrolling

Well, it seems like we’re not the only ones doom-scrolling at 1 AM to avoid our nightly bouts of existential dread. According to the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS), Egypt has seen a 12.5% increase in the number of mobile internet users throughout 2022, up until October.

In 2021, 61.8 million people were using mobile internet, and the past year witnessed 7.7 million million more people browsing the internet off their phones, resulting in a total of 69.5 million people obsessively refreshing their social media feeds or watching over-the-top reaction videos. On the other hand, the number of cell phone users fell by 2.3% to 99.1 million in October 2022, down from 101.4 million the previous year.
