Railway Lines to Get Upgraded with High-Level Electronic Systems

The Ministry of Transportation is set to upgrade its three main railway lines with an up-to-date electronic system, which is expected to be implemented by June 2022. The system will be able to eliminate issues and confusion faced by train drivers and railway station towers. This will be installed alongside a separate project, which will develop the railways station' signal systems at EGP 1 billion.

"The state has been upgrading Egypt's railway, which has suffered from decades of negligence, over the past four years. We have spent hundreds of billions of pounds to upgrade the system. It is not an issue of funding," Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said. "We are confronting an issue of 'time lag', since our modernisation efforts are happening while the old system must continue its operations to serve millions of people daily."

Although these upgrades have faced delays throughout 2020 due to the Coronavirus pandemic, their implementation will be able to prevent more large-scale accidents from taking place on the railway, such as the deadly collision that happened in Sohag in March 2021, killing 18 people and injuring 200 others.
