Record-Breaking 15 Million Tourists Expected in Egypt by End of 2024
Egypt has welcomed over 8 million tourists so far in 2024.
With over 8 million visitors in the first seven months of 2024, Egypt has experienced a surge in tourism this year, despite regional tensions. The Egyptian Tourism Authority expects the number of tourists to exceed 15 million by the end of the year, surpassing the country’s all-time high of 14.9 million in 2023, and the total industry earnings to surpass USD 14 billion.
During the first half of 2024 alone, Egypt’s tourism revenue reached USD 6.6 billion, in comparison with USD 6.3 billion during the same months last year.
The Egyptian Tourism Authority noted a 60% growth in tourism to the Chinese market this year, primarily due to recently tripled flights between China and Egypt. The Japanese market has also seen a 70% increase in visitation since 2023.
As part of a governmental strategy to increase and maintain tourism in Egypt, the Ministry of Tourism is increasing the number of inbound flights and hotel rooms nationwide. This is in an effort to welcome 30 million tourists by 2028.
The tourism sector is a primary source of income for the country, contributing approximately 12% to the total national GDP, and providing around 3 million jobs.
