Sharing Misinformation About Schools Will Now Be a Punishable Offence
Students and guardians who spread misinformation on social media will soon be penalised starting September 30th.
The Ministry of Education and Technical Education has announced that it will impose penalties on students and guardians who take to social media to spread misinformation about schools, or to insult school administrations and staff.
Violating students will first be subject to a warning. After a repeat violation, they will be given a one-week suspension determined by a disciplinary committee. They will also be required to provide a written pledge not to commit the offence again.
In the event of a repeat offence after the above steps have been taken, students may be subject to transferral to a different class, and students and guardians will have to publish a public apology on social media recanting any false information.
A third violation may result in a two-week suspension or transferral to a different school.
Violating guardians may be subject to legal action taken by the school.
These regulations are part of the ministerial guidelines for the 2023/2024 academic year, and will take effect from September 30th.
