Smog City: Cairo Set for Poisonous Air Warning

Cairo is set for a toxic deluge of pollution later tonight, sparking a severe weather warning.

The Egyptian Meteorological Authority has warned Cairenes to stay indoors between 10pm and 10am tonight as the wind speed will cause polluted air to be concentrated over Egypt and lower Egypt.

The conditions could spell disaster for people with heart or respiratory problems, who are in particular danger at this time.

World Health Organisation figures show that the average Cairene inhales more than 20 times the acceptable level of air pollution every day. Meanwhile, the average Cairo resident’s daily air pollution intake is comparable to smoking a pack of cigarettes, according to studies.
