State-Funded Hajj Pilgrimages Cancelled for Second Year in a Row

The tradition was initially dropped due to the global economic downturn in mid-2022.

State-funded Hajj pilgrimages have been cancelled for the second year in a row. The Ministry of Social Solidarity, the Ministry of Awqaf and other governmental institutions would traditionally partly finance Hajj trips for selected employees every year. Earlier in 2022, however, the tradition was dropped due to the global economic downturn.

The Ministry of Social Solidarity and the Ministry of Awqaf announced that, in lieu of funding Hajj trips in 2023, they will prioritise other national projects that support vulnerable communities across the country.
