This makes Rene Trabelsi only the third member of the Jewish minority of 2,000 to enter Tunisia’s cabinet since the country’s independence in 1956.
Prime Minister Youssef Chahed of Tunisia appointed Jewish business man Rene Trabelsi as Minister of Tourism in the Muslim-majority country. This makes Trabelsi the third member of the Jewish minority of 2,000 to enter Tunisia’s cabinet since the country’s independence in 1956.
This was a result of a cabinet reshuffle on Monday amid a political crisis as the president's son, Hafedh Caid Essebsi, leader of the ruling party Nidaa Tounes, called for the dismissal of Chahed because of his government’s failure to revive the economy. The new Minister of Tourism in Tunisia is one of ten fresh new faces added to the cabinet. The newly appointed minister says he hopes that the new faces will inject some much needed urgency into his government that has been slammed for failure to fix an economic crisis.
