UN Fund to Protect Egyptian Archeological Sites Established at COP27

The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has signed an agreement with the United Nations and the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) to establish a fund that would protect archaeological sites across Egypt.

The agreement was made at the COP27 UN Climate Change Conference in Sharm El Sheikh, amidst discussions on the impact of climate change on archaeological sites as well as the artefacts kept in museums, which require strict conditions to ensure their conservation.

All Egyptian museums are thus set to operate using solar energy, with two solar power plants built in the Grand Egyptian Museum and Sharm El Sheikh Museum.

The joint partnership will implement further measures to protect Egyptian historic treasures from the threat of climate change.
