It is not a secret to Egyptians who the richest man in Egypt is. Ask anyone on the streets of Cairo and the name Sawiris will likely be the first thing you hear. Proving just how wealthy he actually is, Nassef Sawiris has officially broken the record the priciest co-op sale in New York City , after purchasing the penthouse at 960 Fifth Avenue for $70 million, according to The New York Daily News.

By purchasing a co-op Sawiris isn't just buying a physical apartment, but rather a number of shares in in the cooperative corporation that owns the building. The previous holder for the record was none other than entertainment mogul David Geffen, who had purchased a $54 million penthouse at 785 Fifth Ave back in 2012.

The apartment was previously held by an 84 year old billionaire, Edgar Bronfman Sr., but was put on market after his death last year. The asking price for the pad was set at $65 million back in March. However, once the apartment was listed, a bidding war ensued between Walmart heiress, Alice Walton and other notable billionaires. However, through determination and a yacht-ful of money, Sawiris secured the record-breaking penthouse.

The palatial 16-room pad has five fireplaces, a built-in safe, and a wraparound terrace with views of Central Park, among many other luxurious perks. One real estate source told The New York Post back in April that the new owner will likely gut the place.

Considering that the Sawiris fortune was listed by Forbes at $7 billion, we are positive that he could easily cover any renovating costs. Actually that reminds us we have to head to Mobinil and pay off our phone bill, so I guess we'll just leave it that, but not before telling you were the safe is supposedly located.
