Zamalek Metro Station to Open in November 2021

Deputy Minister of Transport, Amr Shaat, has announced that the still-under-construction new metro station in Zamalek is set to open by November 2021. Zamalek is one of four stations that will be on the first section of the third line, which will also includes Gamal Abdel Nasser, Maspero and Kit Kat.

The new stations and line extension comes as part of EGP 7 billion renovation and upgrade of Cairo's metro system, which was announced last December. Other renovations include The renovations include improvements to the signal systems, the metro’s current electronic systems, communications infrastructure, central control systems and power supply on the first and oldest line. It will be carried out by international companies and take five years to complete.

While the metro system has been identified as a key factor in improving public transportation in general, Zamalek residents have continually expressed anger at the project, with many claiming that the many historic buildings on the island will be damaged by the ongoing construction.
