Egypt's 'Informal Settlements' to Undergo Colossal EGP 10.8 Billion Infrastructural Reform

The Ministry of Planning's Administrative Reform Program has announced the allocation of EGP 10.8 billion ($630m) for the Informal Settlements Development Fund (ISDF) during the financial year 2019/2020 for a huge infrastructural reform project targeting Egypt's expansive informal settlements, which house nearly 20% of Egypt's urban population, according to UN Habitat.

The nationwide infrastructural reform is set to alleviate ailing issues within these settlements, through the construction of 51 sanitation projects throughout the country's cities, and 295 in its rural villages, which usually lack basic infrastructural sanitation systems.

The reform plan will also focus on the urban development of nine neighborhood districts, offering 1.4 million housing units, while gentrifying over 307,000 currently existing building units.
