Egyptian Cancer Patients Can Now Ride Trains For Free

The smart card that will allow for free travel is valid for a whole year.

Marking World Cancer Day, Egypt's Railway Authority announced that cancer patients across the country will be given 'smart cards' with which they can book train tickets for free, in an effort to ease their burden and increase mobility to and from specialised hospitals, which are highly concentrated in the capital.

The smart card will be valid for a whole year, starting today, and will enable said patients to bring a companion along, also for free. The card holders will be able to book third and second class seats on air-conditioned trains.

The documents needed to obtain the card are simply a medical report, a copy of the patient’s national ID and two photographs. The card is issued 15 days after an application is made, according to Al Ahram.
