Egypt's Minister of Tourism Honoured With the Global Champion for Tourism Award

After a busy year which saw her launch a number of unprecedented campaigns, initiatives and partnerships to boost Egyptian tourism, Dr. Rania Al Mashat was has been announced as the WTTC 2019 Global Champion for Tourism by the World Travel & Tourism Council.

The award was established to recognise the outstanding efforts by public officials who pioneer policies and initiatives that boost their country's competitiveness in the vital economic sector that is tourism.

Under the leadership of Al-Mashat, Egypt's tourism sector saw a somewhat miraculous recovery after hitting rock bottom in recent years. Her tenure, so far, has catapulted tourism into an impressive growth of 16.5% over the past year, well ahead of the global average of 3.9%.

"The Ministry of Tourism has adopted a new approach, the Egypt—Tourism Reform Program (E—TRP), designed to modernise the sector by implementing structural reforms that strengthen Egypt’s competitiveness and are in line with international standards," said Al-Mashat upon receiving the award at a special ceremony in Seville, Spain. "This WTTC recognition is a real honour for me personally and the country at large where our overarching objective is to have at least one individual from each Egyptian household working directly or indirectly in the sector."
