This Egyptian brand is putting its own twist on the traditional Asian street delight and it's delicious AF.
There's never a shortage of outlandish eats popping up all over Cairo; from the hidden Southeast Asian gems of Nasr City to the authentic Yemeni delicacies in Dokki and everything in-between. And it is in this veritable smorgasbord of flavours that Baobuns saw the light of creation.
Baobuns, originally operating out in Dunes in front of Hacienda North Coast, is a more contemporary and modern take on a staple Chinese street food; the storied, mostly-meat-filled steamed Bao bun. Authentic Bao buns are a part of Asian cuisine, being a closed steamed dough bun filled with a variety of options, "The first time I used Instagram, I decided to go to the explore section to see what it's about. That's when I stumbled upon a picture of two of these Bao buns and I was impressed. So I started doing research and trying to adapt it to something that would work here" tells us owner of Baobuns Anthony Hamama.
And Hamama's spin on the buns includes a massive menu to impress even the fussiest of foodies; including a juicy grilled beef bun with chimichurri sauce and an elegant balsamic glaze, a crunchy shrimp tempura bun with lettuce, bell peppers and a sweet chili sauce, a shrimp bun, a spicy chicken bun, or a more local (and delicious) twist with hot and crunchy fried falafel with tahini and a sesame finish, and if you're more into the sweeter side of things, then you can't miss out on their vanilla ice cream bun served on a fried bun with your choice of sauce and topping.
With a new "delivery-only" hub having recently opened in the Downtown area, the happy and often busy citizens of Downtown, Zamalek, Garden City, Mohandeseen and Dokki can now get their hands on these tasty buns (pun on the buns intended) delivered right to your doorstep. That's in addition to their Dandy Mall container hub, which made Sheikh Zayed, 6th of October, and Smart Village dwellers bao converts with Baobuns delivery since the start.
When asked about their inevitable expansion, Hamama added "We plan to move into the 5th Settlement and Maadi areas, primarily for delivery but we might consider a stand like we used to operate."
