The Grand Imam, Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, and the Minister of Environment, Dr. Yasmine Fouad, have signed an agreement to help protect the environment, raise awareness, and integrate environmental concepts into the educational curricula of students at Al-Azhar universities. On top of that, the protocol indicates that Al-Azhar is about to upgrade all their buildings to meet environmentally-friendly standards.

A number of electronic platforms will be launched in order to raise a sense of loyalty among citizens, along with training programmes and meetings in Egyptian universities to discuss sustainability and beyond. There will also be qualifying procedures for Azhari preachers, who will explain environmental issues and link them to Islamic rulings.

Al-Azhar will also encourage postgraduate students to pursue topics related to the environment. To continue raising awareness among all levels, the Ministry of Environment shared articles and stories among children to help them understand how to correct the negative impact they may have on the environment, with the focus on climate change during the first year of the protocol.

The protocol also ensures Al-Azhar’s participation in COP27 conference that will be held in Sharm El Sheikh in November.
