Egypt's Own Ugly Betty

The Arab world sees its own reincarnation of the hit TV series, staring Amy Samir Ghanem as the unfortunate protagonist.

Egypt's Own Ugly Betty

Egypt’s very own version of hit TV series Ugly Betty has just hit screens, as Amy Samir Ghanem reprises the role America Ferrera made famous throughout the noughties. Before you start complaining about how Egyptians are unoriginal and how they just copy everything, let us remind you that Ugly Betty itself is the American version of Columbian show Yo Soy Betty la Fea, which has seen 19 other official international adaptations. So if you’re going to complain about something, make it that Egypt is officially 2000 and late.

The Arabic title is Heba Regl ElGhorab which roughly translates to Unfortunate Heba, and sees Samir Ghanem step up to a leading role, following in her sister Donia’s footsteps. The show is currently on Wednesdays through to Saturdays, every week, at 7pm local time, on OSN’s Ya Hala! channel, and we imagine it’ll be coming to free channels in a few months’ time.
