The history of massage therapy can be dated back more than 5,000 years ago to a time when several cultures used natural herbs and oils to release pain. It is considered one of the oldest methods of pain relief and peace. The word ‘massage’ is derived from the Arabic word massa for ‘to feel’, which is exactly what the Resense Spa at the Royal Maxim Palace Kempinski achieved. They revitalised my senses.Once I entered the Resense Spa they greeted me with friendly smiles and a small cup of sweetened lemon juice. Later, I was escorted to the women’s section. The women inside were very welcoming and waiting to help with anything I might’ve needed. After I put on the very fluffy white robe, which made me feel like a teddy bear was giving me a hug, I was escorted to a big, dimly lit room. “Our new Resense Spa is designed to be more than just a spa, offering instead an overall wellbeing experience. From state of the art fitness and healthy juices, to our holistic healing approach, each tailor-made wellness journey is unique and personal to our guests,” the spa's director Birgit Marie Solheim told me. The classic European design and art pieces hanging on the walls were gorgeous; being someone who studies art and design, I was surprised to find paintings such as Flaming June by Frederic Leighton. Everything in the massage room was white and beige; their colour palette gave a serene feel to the overall ambiance. Paired with an earthy scent, the entire atmosphere was incredibly peaceful - unlike the rest of Cairo.Once I lay on the soft white bed, she informed me that I was going to get an Arabian massage. I lay there wondering what an Arabian massage was. I suddenly felt a warm towel on my feet, which felt very comforting. She started to massage my legs and slowly moved to my back; I was captivated by her deep touch. The natural and earthy scent of the oil added a refreshing feel that lead me to complete serenity. My mind went blank; the only thought in my head was never wanting to leave that room. Throughout the massage, she applied the right amount of pressure in the areas that I required the most; it was like she had a sixth sense. She used long, gliding and flowing strokes; I felt my muscles release all the pain and joint stiffness. Once it was over, I was in a state of tranquility and finally felt rejuvenated. It was all very Zen.

After the massage, I used most of their facilities. Because what kind of idiot would I be if I didn't make full use of my day at this incredible spa? I started with the pool; I quickly took off my robe and slowly dipped my toes in the water, only to find it at the perfect temperature. Going down the stairs, the warm water was exactly what I needed after a relaxing massage. I then used their Jacuzzi and when I got out, I curled up on the heated chaise longue pondering life - I know, a tad cheesy, but it’s true. That's what a good massage and a dip in a hot tub after it will do to you.

I finally went back to their grand dressing room, and took a shower. After drying off, my skin was softer than ever - I assumed it was because of the oils used on me during the massage. What I loved most about their bathroom is how there were a few dressing tables with a brush and a few products I might’ve needed. I sat on the chair, brushed my hair and put my makeup and was off. Back to the real world. *sigh*
