Nordcoast: Swim in Style

In the dismal void that is the swimwear market in Egypt, one brand has launched to put an end to our woes. Nordcoast brings stylish, cute and affordable swimwear to Cairo.

Nordcoast: Swim in Style

With Eid on the horizon, it's time to start thinking about your formet el sahel beach body (which essentially means stop binge eating atayef) and about the actually swimwear you'll be donning. Besides the fact that the swimsuit-buying process is a horrific ordeal, with hideous lights in the changing rooms that made you look like a beached whale trying to wear a bikini, it's actually really difficult to find swimwear in general in this country. When you do land on an item you like, either everyone owns it or it is ridiculously overpriced – when did little bit of fabrics command the same price as a dress?

The founders of a new swimwear line in Cairo by the name of Nordcoast had just this in mind when they created the brand. Started just a few weeks ago by Kareem El Shaffei and Deana Shaaban, Kareem tell us "there just aren’t that many places where you can buy nice swimwear here in Egypt, and there aren’t many homegrown brands." So they decided to fill that void.

The swimwear, which is available at Deana Shaaban store in Zamalek, is still testing the waters with its first line, but so far the pieces look awesome. They’ve nailed some of the hottest swimwear trends of this summer, like fringe and one-pieces with drastically cool cutouts. "We're going for a look that's trendy, comfortable, and young," Kareem tells us, "And it's just for everyday beach chilling."

The pieces are equal parts stylish and wearable, in bright hues perfect for the summertime. Most are solid colours but they've also got some seriously cool zig-zag patterned bandeau bikinis, and other basic bandeaus, with those three horizontal straps at the back that are all the rage right now.

For now, Nordcoast's swimwear is manufactured in the US, but the brand is planning on moving it here soon, designing their own pieces, and at some point including men's swimwear. We can't wait to see what else they've got in store…
