Sakkara Country Club's Still Got It

When we think about summer getaways, our  minds always turn to the beach or far flung urban destinations like Paris or New York. But Egypt’s tourism is flailing and now is a better time than ever to travel locally and off the beaten path. Sakkara Country Club, which has been standing proud since 1987 and having just been refurbished last year, has come to be one of our favourite spots to tan, take in the view and totally chill out, minus the torturous car drives thanks to its convenient location, just off the Marioteya Canal in Giza.

Despite the chaos of Cairo, and the winding streets  and alleys that make Sakkara such a unique area, as soon as you pull up to the gates of Sakkara Country Club, a wave of calm comes over you. You can’t hear a sound except the bird singing and the occasional splash in the pool. And what a pool it is – 760 sq metres of beautiful blue water, heated in the winter and with Jacuzzi jets all year long, it’s quite the sight. Surrounded by chaise lounges, palm trees and a bar, we’ve blissfully hung out here for far too long. Pro-tip: they’ll even let you bring your own bottle if you’re planning on one of those days. And when those days turn into night, check in to any of the hotel’s 26 rooms and kick back in a simple and serene setting.

The country club’s restaurant serves authentic Egyptian dishes as well as international favourites, for pool-side snacking, midnight feasts and everything in between. The hearty food on offer is perfect for a day filled with activities, if you’re the type – unlike us, let’s be honest – who prefers to get up and get stuff done. Sakkara Country Club is, after all, a country club and that means it’s an equestrian dream come true. With stables populated by nearly 100 Arabian horses, both pros and beginners can gallop, trot and canter their way around, under the guidance and supervision of their professional riding instructors. If you’re after something a little more high-octane, they can organise a dessert excursion on quad bikes. With four international sized tennis courts you can get your dose of sport, while the kids are supervised on the sprawling jungle gym.

Special private events can also be organised at the brilliant venue, from Bedouin-style desert meals to weddings, they can help you create memories, tailored just for you. Whether you rent out the private villa on their grounds, complete with its own pool and garden, or take over the clubhouse and main buildings, they’ll cater to your wishes.

The best thing is, their prices are super affordable. A day use is just 175LE per person, including a meal and use of the changing rooms, all year round.
