You can take the Egyptian out of Egypt but you can’t take Egypt out of the Egyptian. Although if you're not in touch with our local lingo, you might not be able to keep up with our news, our music, or even - God forbid! - our Ramadan specials. To spread the joy of our beloved Egyptian dialect around the world, clad with its ‘yaani' and ‘mashi’ and even its 'ma3lesh ya akhi', a new initiative called 'Etkallem Masry' has just been launched by the Ministry of State for Emmigration and Egyptian Expatriates. The social media campaign will publish videos and activities on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to encourage Egyptians abroad to practice their native tongue.

The initiative mainly targets younger Egyptians who have been born abroad as second or third generation immigrants. The campaign will include a number of educational posts about the country’s biggest historical sites, so they can get a bit of culture and history in one go.
