Number of Khul' Cases in Egypt Ranked by Governorate
Over the past decade, the number of khul’ cases have increased as women were increasingly empowered to utilize this legal right and gain more agency over their lives. Here are the number of successful khul’ cases in 2019, ranked by governorate.
2020 marks the 20th anniversary of the "khul’" introduction into Egypt’s legal system. This meant that for the first time in Egyptian history, Muslim women were given the legal right to divorce their husbands through the court of law, without needing those same husbands' consent. Over the past decade, the number of khul’ cases have increased as women were increasingly empowered to utilize this legal right and gain more agency over their lives. Cairo has ranked first in the highest number of khul’ cases in 2020 with 3761 cases, followed by Alexandria which saw 2,500 cases.
Coming in third is Sharqiya which saw 787 cases, followed by Gharbia at 433 cases, Beheira at 430 cases and Qalyubiyya at 394 cases.
Qena witnessed 345 khul’ rulings. 18 were ruled in Minya, 12 in Marsa Matrouh and finally, one in Aswan.
