THE FIRST FLOOR

It’s not every day that you hear about a band that began when a violinist and a bassist got together for a jamming session. But that’s exactly how El Dor El Awal got started. When Mohamed Samy and Ahmed Omar discovered how brilliant their strings sounded together, they decided it was time to borrow a couple Wust El Balad boys, Bob and Mizo, to bring some sweet Arabian beats into the mix. Fady Badr and his keyboard quickly came on board, and Nour Ashour brought his saxophone, while Maissam Jalal joined with his flute, because no good jazz band can be without a bit of blow.

Thus was born Cairo’s grooviest Oriental jazz group, El Dor El Awal, who have been tearing it up on stages all over Egypt since 1999, occasionally adding Mesheal’s clarinet sick skills, Wael Al Naggar on the accordion, and Raphael’s banging tamborino. The ensemble has released two studio albums to critical acclaim. Rumour has it, that after they shot to fame, the group considered renaming themselves Penthouse, but decided to stay humble on the First Floor.

If you’ve heard El Dor El Awal before, then you know why these crowd-pleasers are such a sensation with their complex melodies, ingenious rhythms, and funky beatboxing. If you’ve never been lucky enough to catch one of their mind-blowing sets, you’ve got a chance this Saturday 12th January, when they take to the stage of Cairo Jazz Club performing with Ashara Gharby.

The dynamic group have graced the stage of CJC more times than we can count, but that doesn’t stop us from getting there as fast as we can whenever we hear they’re playing. So we highly suggest you book your spot now here.

Keep up to date with Dor El Awal’s performance schedule and updates on their Facebook page here.
