100 Egyptian Surrealist Paintings Featured in the Reina Sofia Museum and Here Are Our Favourite 11
One of the world's largest contemporary art museums, Spain's Reina Sofia, is recognising the work of legendary Egyptian surrealists of the Art et Liberté group, who were active in the 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s.
The Museo Nacional Centre de Arte Reina Sofia is currently holding an exhibition named ‘Rupture, War, and Surrealism in Egypt between 1938 and 1948' by a group of Egyptian artists called Art et Liberté. The exhibition runs until May 28th, 2017 and features the works of Art et Liberté, a group of Egyptian surrealist artists who were active during the Second World War. The installation will show around 100 paintings, many photographs, and documentaries.
The group was founded by Georges Henein, Ramses Younan, Kamel El-Temissany, and Fouad Kamel was deeply entrenched in the Surrealist movement. The group is famed for beginning surrealist art in Egypt and questioning the academic and nationalist tendency of upper class art that pervaded Egypt at the time.
