Qalyubia's El-Khanka Hospital to Become Advanced Mental Health Complex

The Ministry of Health and Population has announced plans to transform the historic El-Khanka Hospital for Mental Health in Qalyubia into an advanced, integrated medical complex. This redevelopment initiative aims to address mental health, addiction treatment, and elderly care, aligning with President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi's directives to enhance national mental health and addiction services.

Established under the reign of Mohamed Ali Pasha in 1912 on a 170-acre site, El-Khanka Hospital currently offers a broad spectrum of psychiatric services. The new plan involves the construction of a state-of-the-art complex covering 1,400 square meters. This upgrade will expand the hospital’s bed capacity from 1,400 to 1,800 and include improvements to its outpatient clinics.

The new complex will feature cutting-edge outpatient facilities, administrative offices, and accommodations for resident doctors. The upgraded hospital will provide enhanced therapeutic and preventive services, including treatments for tumors, mental health disorders, and drug addiction.

During a recent inspection, the Minister of Health and Population observed a shortage of several medications and has reached out to the Egyptian Authority for Unified Procurement to address the issue. Additionally, a feasibility study will be conducted to explore the establishment of an emergency ward, aimed at reducing the need for patient transfers to other facilities.
