Egypt & France Sign MoU for Locomotive Industry Cooperation

Minister of Transport Kamel Al-Wazir and French Minister of Economy and Finance Bruno Le Maire have inked an MoU outlining a roadmap for boosting the locomotive industry's reach and initiating the construction of Greater Cairo's Sixth Metro Line.

The Egyptian Cabinet approved an investment proposal from French company Alstom to establish two factories in Alexandria, with plans to generate 1,200 job opportunities for Egyptian engineers and technicians. One facility will specialize in producing electrical systems and railway components, while the other will focus on manufacturing various units for metro lines, trams, LRT, monorails, and express trains.

The initial phase of the Sixth Metro Line will stretch from Al Khosous in Qalyubia to Maadi in Cairo, with subsequent extensions planned to New Cairo, connecting to the Mohamed Naguib high-speed electric train station and the Narguis monorail station. Collaborating with the French Development Agency (AFD), the ministry aims to develop additional projects, including the Abou Qir Metro linking Alexandria's downtown to the Abou Qir peninsula, the restoration of the Al Raml Tram, an extension of the first metro line to Shebin Al Qanater in Qalyubia, and the doubling of the train line linking Sherbin in Daqhliya, Qellin in Kafr El Sheikh, and Damanhour in Beheira.
