AUC Student Club Builds Underwater Robot

Egyptian students are no strangers to making headlines for revolutionary inventions, and these AUC students have just made the cut for building an underwater robot.

It can be said that Egyptian students are the brainiest children of the world. We’re not being patriotic, but they never seem to disappoint when it comes to clever inventions. You’ve got the brainwave-operated wheelchair that was created by engineering students at Modern Academy, the 17-year-old science student who turned rice-straw pollution into biodiesel, and now AUC’s Robotix Club who have just created a robot that is functional underwater. You totally read that right. Functional. Under. Water.

The Robotix Club crafted the machine to compete in the Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) competition last year – which they won – and have now qualified for the regional competition held in Alexandria next month. For this level, the robot will be tasked with repairing a broken fountain. “The robot must be able to go underwater, disconnect the power cable, and stop the flow of water by turning a valve. Once the new fountain is installed, the robot must then be able to restore the flow of water,” read AUC’s press release. This is the first year that the AUC hosts a robotics competition to promote technical skills and talents in Egypt. Mohamed Gamal Abdel-Shafi, Vice President of Operations of Robotix, believes it is essential that universities not only promote skill-based sciences into curriculum, but also to “integrate all sciences, along with social sciences and business.”

If the club wins next month’s competition, they will represent Egypt in the finals held in the USA in June later this year.
