18 killed, 18 Injured in School Bus Collision

Tragedy struck when 18 lives were lost and a further 18 were injured, when a school bus hit a truck in the Beheira governorate in the Nile Delta.

The incident occurred on the Alexandria agricultural road, when a school bus carrying students from Kafr El-Dawar’s Al Orman Hotel and Tourism high school collided with a private truck carrying wood. Talking to Al-Ahram, the deputy to the Minister of Interior for transportation explained that the violent collision occurred when the bus driver attempted to dodge a car, hitting another vehicle as well as the truck, which led to an explosion of its gas tank. However, this statement conflicts with what a senior police official in Beheira said, who claims the collision was the fault of the truck, which rammed into the bus.

Sadly, road accidents are a recurring issue troubling motorists, as this is but the latest in a string of reported accidents resulting in multiple lives lost. A recent government report stated that 100,000 car accidents, resulting in 33,000 killed and another 150,000 injured took place in Egypt between 2008-2012. Some speculate that this number is too low, others suggest it is too high, but the fact remains that Egyptian roads are unsafe, and will only worsen as long as traffic laws aren’t properly enforced, and roads aren’t properly maintained.
