Attempted Prison Break in Giza Leaves 1 Dead and 17 Injured

An attempted prison break at a police station in Giza on Saturday has failed, leaving one dead and as many as 17 injured, according to statements made by a Ministry of the Interior spokesman.

Making the statement via a Facebook page of the ministry, Abu Bakr Abdel-Karim mentioned that defendants allegedly took advantage of a fight inside a cell in Al-Hawamdeya police station breaking through an internal door.

Managing to escape their cell, the detainees ran to the outer entrance of the police station and proceeded to attempt to break open the main door. Before they managed to break through, the police began deploying teargas, foiling the breakout attempt and leaving one dead from tear gas inhalation and 17 injured.

As it stands, the statement claims the incident has been referred to the General Prosecution for further investigation.
