Imagine going into the hospital for what should have been an allegedly routine cyst removal and the doctor instead gives you an illegal operation that kills you. That is what is thought to have happened to 17-year-old Mayar Mohamed Mousa.

Mousa and her twin sister went to a private hospital in Suez for the removal of a sebaceous cyst on her uterus, based on a statement by the family to the Health Ministry Inspector in Suez and a police officer. The mother is a nurse and, as the late father was a surgeon, the family believed they were going to a doctor they could trust. The operation was conducted by a registered female doctor; however, following Mousa's death, there was an autopsy that showed a botched attempt to conduct a female circumcision on the girl, said the Suez Health Ministry Undersecretary Lotfi Abdel-Samee.

On Monday, May 30th, Suez Governor Ahmed Al-Hitamy had authorities shut down the hospital and transfer the remaining patients to other facilities. According to The Guardian, the police questioned all medical and administrative personnel at the hospital. As of today, Governor Al-Hitamy has issued an arrest warrant for the doctor responsible saying that the arrest is for 'unlawful surgery'.
