Ain Sokhna-Matrouh High Speed Train to Begin Operating in June 2024
The line is the first phase of a broader network worth USD 23 billion extending for about 1.8 thousand kilometres across the country, which will link Cairo, Aswan, the North Coast and the Red Sea.
The first phase of the high-speed electric train line between Ain Sokhna and Matrouh will start operating in June 2024.
German railway company Deutsche Bahn submitted an offer to operate the train’s first line, and if it goes through, Deutsche Bahn may determine the price of the ticket in coordination with Egyptian railway authorities.
Last September, the Egyptian government signed a USD 4.5 billion contract with a consortium of German companies led by Siemens, Orascom Construction and Arab Contractors to implement, design, supply and maintain the first line of the high-speed electric train network, which will link the cities of Ain Sokhna, Alexandria, New Alamein and Matrouh across 660 kilometres.
