Egypt’s foreign ministry has announced that Egypt has been elected for a four-year term on the executive Board of UN-Habitat, reports Al Ahram online.

Focusing on Urban Development and Human Settlements, the UN-Habitat's executive board is compromised of 36 elected members that oversee UN-Habitat's agenda and operations. A statement read that Egypt was chosen in "recognition of the Egyptian government’s efforts to implement urban planning and development projects to build new cities, eliminate slums and rehabilitate areas unsuitable for habitation."

The announcement of Egypt’s election took place at Nairobi’s United Nations office during the first UN-Habitat assembly, where the African nominees included Egypt, Morocco, Kenya, Ethiopia, Cameroon, The Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Senegal, Angola and Malawi. Running from the 27th to the 30th of May, the UN-Habitat Assembly is set to take place every four years.

Set up in 1978, the UN-Habitat's main goal is urban development and the improvement living standards which the organisation works towards through the sustainable development of human settlements. With a global increase in the rate of people living in cities, UN-Habitat aims to solve environmental, social and spatial challenges.
