Egyptian Government Loans Artefacts to New York's Met Museum

The Egyptian Cabinet has approved the loan of several archaeological pieces to New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met) and Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio for two exhibitions titled ‘Africa & Byzantium’ The artefact collections are from the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir, the Coptic Museum, and the St. Catherine Monastery.

The initial ‘Africa & Byzantium’ exhibition is scheduled to take place at the Met from November 13th, 2023, to March 3rd, 2024. The second exhibition is slated for the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, commencing on April 14th, 2024, and concluding on July 21st, 2024.

The ‘Africa & Byzantium’ exhibition showcases various masterpieces, including mosaics, sculptures, pottery, and manuscripts, highlighting Africa's essential role in global trade and culture. It unveils rarely seen artworks, emphasising Africa's influence on premodern societies, particularly Byzantium, offering fresh insights into the continent's rich historical and cultural contributions.
