New Instagram Filter Showcases Artefacts at Egyptian Museums
The new filters will showcase a selection of artefacts in their original state and provide key information about the objects.
A new project centred around Instagram filters, designed by Meta and overseen by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, is being implemented at the Egyptian Museum at Tahrir and the National Museum of Egyptian Civilisation in Fustat.
The filters, when complete, will use virtual reality technology to demonstrate how a curated selection of artefacts on display originally looked, thousands of years ago. The selected artefacts have been chosen to reflect different eras of ancient Egyptian history. The filters will also provide visitors with information about the object in frame.
The project is hoped to contribute to an improved tourist experience at the museums, as well as the promotion of Egyptian cultural tourism on social media. The ministry also hopes that the novelty feature will help to showcase the richness of Egyptian history in an simultaneously entertaining and educational manner.
The ministry is currently reviewing other proposals for collaborations with Meta, which would see the use of ‘Metaverse’ technology to commercialise digital tourism in Egyptian cities and at famous Egyptian landmarks.
