New Wildlife Park Proposed in Fayoum’s Wadi El Rayan

The Ministry of Environment is planning to establish a wildlife shelter in Fayoum’s Wadi El Rayan reserve as part of a cooperative project between Egypt and Jordan.

The proposed project aims to resettle endangered animal and plant species in order to protect biodiversity and adapt to climate change as well as generate ecotourism in Egypt. It will help boost up investments in the field of preservation of natural life and biodiversity as well as increase the cooperation between the two countries.

The proposal was made during a visit by the Minister of Environment Yasmin Fouad to Jordan’s nature and wildlife shelter, Al Ma’wa. The shelter was established in 2011 through a partnership between the Princess Alia Foundation and Vienna’s Four Paws International, and offers sanctuary for multiple species including lions, hyenas, and tigers that were brought from danger zones and were in need of specialised care.

The Wadi El Rayan reserve spans 1,800 square kilometres and is home to a number of various wildlife species including foxes, gazelles, and rare species of resident and migrant birds.
