New Details Revealed About the Proposed Bridge Linking Egypt and Saudi Arabia

Nabil Al-Amoudi, Egypt’s Minister of Transport, has announced to the Saudi Press Agency that construction of the proposed causeway and bridge linking Egypt and Saudi Arabia is nearing.

The bridge will be named after the late King Salman who first discussed the proposal with President El-Sisi in a visit to Cairo in 2016. At the time, only the costs, believed to be $4 billion, were revealed.

Despite there still being no concrete dates in place, the latest news shedding light on the project includes that it will “allow the passage of vehicles, freight, and passenger trains,” as well as provide an alternative Hajj route between both countries. It is also said that the bridge is expected to generate a total of $200 billion in trade revenues annually.

The bridge will link Sharm El-Sheikh to Saudi through its coastal city of Tabuk, and would extend 7-9 kilometres over the Red Sea.
