19-Year-Old Gets Arrested Over Video Criticising Sisi
Ezzedeen Khaled, a member of street performing group Awlad al-Shawarea, has been arrested for “insulting state institutions.”
Egyptian street performer Ezzedeen Khaled has been arrested over a satirical YouTube video criticising President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
The 19-year-old is a member of Awlad al-Shawarea (Arabic for Street Children) band, who made the viral video for which he has been arrested. Khaled’s lawyer, Mahmoud Othman, says he was accused of inciting anti-government protests and releasing an online video “insulting state institutions.” Othman told The Associated Press that Khaled was arrested from his home on Saturday.The arrest is the latest of many such human rights violations by the regime, which saw journalists, activists, and even private citizens detained for protesting the government’s decision to relinquish the islands of Tiran and Sanafir to Saudi Arabia.
Since the removal of Former President Mohamed Morsi there has been a visible increase in arrests of anyone critical – even in a satirical manner – of the State.
