California, here we come! Egyptian startup Koshk Comics has just been nominated for the 2016 Tech-I Global Pitch Competition semifinals in Silicon Valley, California, and is competing through online votes.

The first thing that comes to mind when someone says the word ‘comics’ is an image of Japanese anime characters with punkish haircuts engaged in a lot of tragic scenes. And even though some of us absolutely love Japanese anime (and maybe even think they have greater depth and content in them than many so-called bestsellers), others among us may not feel very connected to such comics and think - wrongly - that all comic art is irrelevant to them and their lives.

Changing the game is Egyptian startup Koshk Comics, a website for comic artists to connect, collaborate, as well as self-publish their digital comics. It is also a mobile app that allows (cool) readers to flip through and enjoy visual stories and comic books. The startup, which is enrolled with the American University in Cairo’s Venture Lab, is the brainchild of Amr Hussein and Mostafa El-Saadani. Now the Koshk Comics is competing as one of the 51 startups in the semifinals at the 2016 Tech-I Global Pitch Competition, vying for one of the 15 spots in the finals for the 2016 Global Entrepreneurship Summit taking place in the Silicon Valley, California on the 23rd and 24th of June.

To get there, Koshk Comics has posted their pitch video online in a bid to get the most votes from April 1 to May 1. So, for all the comics buffs reading this – or the ones who aren’t big fans just yet and whose minds we’re trying to change –be sure to check out some awesome comic art (that also hits home) and vote for a truly unique initiative that will only add value to Egypt’s art scene.

You can still vote until the 1st of May, knowing that with each vote, Egypt (as a country and territory) will rank higher in nomination to win GIST Regional Startup Boot Camp training resources for its entrepreneurs in 2017. So what are you waiting for?!
