Eight Not-So-Secret Speakeasies in Dubai

Speakeasies have made a comeback, and the UAE is embracing this resurgence with a contemporary twist. Gone are the days of secret knock codes and hushed whispers; today’s speakeasies are chic, stylish, and designed for those in the know. Tucked away behind unmarked doors, hidden inside bustling restaurants, or nestled under the cover of night, these elusive spots offer a taste of nostalgia with a modern flair. In cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the art of the speakeasy has evolved into sophisticated interiors, innovative cocktail menus, and a dash of mystery that invites exploration. Here are the eight places that are doing it best…

Flashback

Flashback Speakeasy Lounge at Paramount Hotel does a perfect job capturing the glamor of the 1920s with its live music scene, featuring Motown, jazz, and smooth acoustics. They also host their own Rock ‘N’ Cabaret nights as well as immersive murder mystery musicals on Wednesdays.

Secret Room

Secret Room Dubai, located inside F.R.N.D.S Grand Cafe, is a creative speakeasy experience with a hidden entrance through a mock Japanese market. Inside, hand painted murals and a large DJ booth set the stage for a night of vibrant energy.

Ly-La

Tucked beneath Alaya restaurant, LY-LA is an underground bar in DIFC that exudes Arabian tent vibes. It opens at 11 PM, offering a space for the DIFC crowd to enjoy house music and late-night drinks.

Moonshine

If you’re looking for Moonshine and you see a green fridge door, know that you’ve made it. Inside the sandwich shop Wise Guys, there’s a whole secret bar in DIFC with a prohibition-era theme. It serves classic mixed drinks with a modern twist, perfect for a cozy, intimate night out.

Gohan

Gohan takes “secret bar” to the next level, with dual entrances at Emirates Towers and a secret passageway entry. It’s also one of Dubai’s chicest speakeasies, serving a menu composed entirely of Japanese street foods.

Ongaku

Ongaku, found within DIFC’s CLAP Dubai, mixes nightlife with music in a late-night speakeasy setting. There’s always a guest DJ in the house, and their signature cocktails coupled with stunning views of Dubai’s skyline make it a top spot for night owls.

Voyage

Accessible through a pendulum-inspired door, Voyage, the speakeasy-style venue within Amelia Restaurant and Lounge, is a private, exclusive space on the second floor of the renowned restaurant. This hidden gem is open from Thursday to Saturday from 11 PM.

Galaxy Bar

Galaxy Bar in DIFC offers a celestial-themed experience with high-end cocktails named after stars and constellations. Known for its exclusivity, the intimate lounge features a setting that mimics a starry Dubai night.
