Siwa's Shali Fortress Has Just Been Fully Restored

After two years of work, conservation
efforts at the abandoned Siwan village of Shali have officially ended.
Shali Fortress, one of the biggest and oldest destinations in Siwa, saw
its centuries-old commercial zones, marketplaces, environmental services
entirely upgraded in order to provide a better quality of life to
Siwans, and to empower them economically.
Abandoned after heavy rains at the beginning of the 20th century that left the fortress uninhabitable, Shali remains one of the biggest tourist attractions for visitors to Siwa. Now that the restoration work has been completed, Siwa is well on its way to becoming an internationally renowned ecotourism destination which already has many of Egypt’s best ecolodges.
The restoration project was funded by a EUR 600,000 grant from the European Union,, and designed and implemented by the Environmental Quality International for Small and Medium Enterprise Development (EQI-SME).The project was organized through the Ministry of International Cooperation, the Ministry of Environment, and the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.
