Egypt's Unemployment Rate in Second Quarter of 2018 Falls to 9.9%

A small victory, but a victory nonetheless.

The unemployment rate in Egypt has dropped from 10.6% to 9.9%  between the first and second quarter of 2018 as per an announcement by Egypt’s Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS), according to Egypt Independent. It has also dropped by 2.1% compared to the same quarter last year.

The number of unemployed reached 2.875 Million, or 9.9% of the labor force, a decrease of 219,000 people or 7.1% compared to the first quarter of the year.

The unemployment rate in urban areas, on the other hand, has dropped from 13.6% to 11.6% compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Out of all unemployed individuals, the majority are 15-29-year-olds, amounting to 77.9% of the total.

During last year’s Youth Conference, the Ministry of Social Solidarity announced that a program called “Forsa” was launched in Upper Egypt, which aims to provide job opportunities for youth in different fields.
