Minimum Wage for Egypt’s Civil Servants to Increase in 2017

The Ministry of Planning, Monitoring, and Administrative Reform (MPMAR) is currently working on a study to increase the minimum wage for civil servants from 1200 to 1500 in the fiscal year 2017/2018, according to Egypt Independent. The study, however, is yet to be assessed by the Finance Ministry and all other competent ministries to determine its application. 

As inflation seeps its way through all daily consumables, low-income households are burdened with an increasing cost of living. But as the state suffers monetary deficit, the increase could only be applied on the 2017/2018 fiscal year, officials told the Egyptian newspaper.

There are currently 6.5 million civil servants in Egypt's public sector. The ministry remains inconclusive regarding the exact cost of this increase for all 6.5 million servants, especially considering that at least 200,000 of them retire every year.
