The first rule of fight club is you do not talk about fight club, but clearly that principle was not adhered to in this situation. The 1999 film Fight Club was an international cult sensation, spawning many real fight clubs across the world and although Egyptian men have always had a penchant for swarming to any fight, it was strange to find out about an organised underground society of Egyptian women dedicated to beating each other up for sport.

Although the source, who refused to reveal her identity or that of the fighters, explained that the weekly fights, which they call Shakhrama, happen in Maadi and through word of mouth have only reached a select group of girls who are looking for this unique kind of release.

"It's fun," she says bluntly explaining why they do it, "As women we don't have many ways to express ourselves and this let's us get our anger out without being harassed or judged by men in any way"

"We wanted to show Egyptian women in a different way - not as vulnerable as they're always made out to be."

The footage and imagery shows a degree of gore which begs the question about what these girls' parents might think. "We try not to damage anyone on their faces," she says, "But sometimes things get out of hand and we have to use make up or say we fell."
