Egyptian Student Makes Bullet-Proof Armour Breakthrough

Spreading across the internet is news of an Egyptian student who has developed a revolutionary new type of body armour that is both lightweight and relatively cheap to produce.

With security forces under attack by militants, the timing couldn’t be better for British University in Cairo student, Remon Ashraf, to develop a cheap and lightweight bullet-proof vest. Talking with Africanews, Ashraf explains that “The idea came to me after seeing the frequent attacks on police officers and security personnel. The attacks are no longer the same…providing the soldiers with safety no longer requires traditional heavy armour,”

Traditionally body armour is layered with heavy steel, ceramic, or metallic plates. Using chemical additives, adhesives, and polyamide fabrics Ashraf claims he has able to reduce the weight by half and that his armour can protect from 9mm pistol bullet at a fraction of the cost.

The ultimate goal is to further develop the product to be able to withstand automatic machine gun fire and rifles, which Ashraf believes is possible.
