Largest Sea Turtle Nesting Site Found in Red Sea
Located on the Four Sisters Islands - Marmar, Dahreb, Malathu and Jadir - this area is home to over 2,500 recorded turtle nests.
The General Organization for the Conservation of Coral Reefs and Marine Turtles in the Red Sea (SHAMS) announced the discovery of the largest sea turtle nesting site in the Red Sea.
Located on the Four Sisters Islands - Marmar, Dahreb, Malathu and Jadir - this area is home to over 2,500 recorded turtle nests, underscoring its importance for endangered species like the green and hawksbill turtles.
Dr. Khaled Isfahani, CEO of SHAMS, emphasized the designation of these islands as a “species management area,” an important step toward conserving marine biodiversity. This initiative aligns with Saudi Vision 2030’s environmental goals, which include transforming 30% of Saudi Arabia’s natural areas into protected reserves.
SHAMS teams have so far identified over 180 nesting sites along the Red Sea coast, forming the basis of a comprehensive conservation plan. This effort will safeguard the natural habitats of endangered turtles and promote sustainable tourism, allowing more people to experience the beauty of this unique marine ecosystem while ensuring its protection.
