The UAE is set to construct a 1,000-megawatt solar power plant in Iraq, following a new cooperation agreement between the Emirati renewable energy firm Masdar and the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity.

The agreement was confirmed during a meeting in Baghdad between Iraq’s Minister of Electricity, Ziyad Ali Fadhil, and UAE Ambassador Abdullah Matar Al Mazrouei. According to Minister Fadhil, the project is “imminent” and aligns with Iraq’s broader efforts to strengthen collaboration with Emirati firms across key development sectors.

Ambassador Al Mazrouei affirmed the UAE’s commitment to deepening ties in renewable energy, stating that Emirati companies are prepared to support Iraq’s infrastructure development and energy diversification goals.

The 1,000-megawatt project represents a major step for Iraq’s energy strategy, which aims to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and expand sustainable energy solutions in partnership with regional allies.
